  3. Once signed in, click the button that says “Get Your Page.” You will be prompted to choose a business type (storefront, service area, or brand) and then find your business or, if it isn’t recognized, add your business information.
  4. After you have entered your business info (address, phone number, category), Google will require that you verify that you can manage the business on Google. You can have the code mailed to you, which takes about 1-2 weeks. Once you get the code, go back into your Google Business account and enter it to finish verification. Why verify? Google will then use your business information in local search results and give you the ability to read/respond to customer reviews and get important insights on how your customers are searching and from where.

  6. Once you go back and verify your business, you will be able to reap all the search benefits Google offers.

Bing Places for Business

Similar to its much more influential counterpart, Google, Bing also offers a way to register your business called Bing Places for Business. The process is fairly similar to Google, but much easier since it lacks some of the features Google offers. You will need to sign up for a free Microsoft account to list your business.

  1. Go to the Bing Places for Business page.
  2. You will be prompted to enter your business information. Once searched, you will be prompted to verify your business.
  3. If your business can’t be found, you can click the “Create New Business” button to add your business.
  4. Bing will walk you through the steps to enter your business information.

Yahoo Listings

Yahoo has recently announced the termination of its iconic Yahoo Directory as of December 31st, 2014. Let’s take a quick comparison between mobile and desktop processors.

How are processors measured?

The processor, or Central Processing Unit (CPU), is the brain of your device. Its job is to carry out instructions that are located in the program, or app. All processors are measured in Hertz (Hz), which is how many operations can be carried out by the processor in one second. Because they have become so fast, almost all processors are measured in GigaHertz (GHz). A phone or computer with a 2.6 GHz processor should be able to complete 2.6 billion operations in one second.

What’s the difference between mobile and desktop processors?

Both computers and smartphones are marketed heavily by their processor, and while the function is the same – both allow the individual devices to work – there are two major differences:

When processors run they generate heat. Lots of heat. Because mobile devices are considerably smaller than computers, the heat generated by a running mobile processor is often amplified and can seriously harm components, or even melt them. Therefore, the developers and designers of the devices limit, or throttle, the speed at which a mobile processor can run. This means that if a processor is getting hot, it will limit its speed, which equates to slower performance.

Because of this throttling, the processor on many phones will actually run slower than the advertised speed. In fact, the advertised speed of mobile processors is normally the maximum. Compare this to most computer processors, where the advertised speed is usually the average running speed, and you begin to see why computers are more powerful.

The second big difference is connected with performance. If you take a computer and compare it to a mobile device with the same speed of processor, the computer will usually be able to do more. This is because the processor is limited in what it can do by the other hardware components, like the RAM, Graphics Processing Unit, etc. Computers have more space, so they can fit more advanced components, and are consequently able to do more.

That being said, processor and other mobile technology is advancing at a blistering pace and it is highly likely that mobile hardware will continue to increase in overall power, and eventually be able to compete more effectively with larger computers.

How to List Your Business on Apple’s New ‘Maps Connect’ Portal

In an open apology letter two years ago, Tim Cook vowed that Apple would work “nonstop” to rehab its disappointing Maps app. His promise turned out to be mostly hot air. Apple’s wonky navigation app is still largely lost.

But hopefully not for much longer. Not if you, the American small-business owner, step up and do your part.

That’s right, Apple wants you to help improve its rinky-dink Maps app by manually adding your company — and a bunch of its juicy defining data — to the clunky app’s local business listings. And, to give you a leg up in getting the job done, the Cupertino tech titan has just quietly rolled out a new (and thankfully free) self-service data entry portal called Apple Maps Connect.

It’s win-win: Apple sharpens a notoriously dull navigation tool and, in a few keystrokes (including your Apple ID and password), you get to add, edit and basically control your company’s information within it. The biggest benefit for business owners, in theory at least: More local customers delivered directly to your doorstep, er, if Apple Maps can actually get them there.

SearchEngineLand reports that the DIY service is only available to small business owners in the U.S. for now, though Apple plans to eventually include additional countries “soon.” If your company’s location is already listed on Apple Maps, no worries. You can use Apple Maps Connect to edit and flesh out your existing listing.

Apple Maps Connect users can also add their company’s website URL, Facebook, Twitter and Yelp pages to their profiles. Also, according to9to5Mac, if your business attracts at least 1 million visitors annually and you pump out WiFi all through your establishment, you can also use the tool to sign up for iBeacon, Apple’s Bluetooth-powered location system that allows retailers to offer special discounts and incentives to in-store shoppers with iPhones and iOS devices.

Apple isn’t the only Silicon Valley heavyweight to crowdsource location and mapping data. Waze, a popular social navigation app that Google scooped up for a cool $1 billion last year, relies on data supplied by its 50 million users to enhance directions on-the-fly and keep drivers posted about nearby traffic and road hazards in real-time. Apple culls data for Maps from Waze as well.

Here’s how to add your company to Apple Maps in eight quick steps:

1. Go to https://mapsconnect.apple.com/.

Log in with your Apple ID and password. If you don’t have an Apple ID, you’ll have to get one. There’s no way around it.

2. Select your relationship to your business.

You’ll be prompted to do this on the Add a New Business Page, which you’ll be automatically directed to after you log in. You can either select “I’m the business owner or “I’m authorized by the business owner.”

3. Enter your basic business details.

This is where you key in your business name, primary business phone number and business address.

4. Verify your business phone number.

You will be prompted to allow Apple to call the number you supply. The call will provide you with a PIN code from Apple. If needed, you can opt to “Verify Later.”

5. Confirm your business location.

There are three categories to choose from, each with several business types within, from “Accountants” to “Video/Film Production” and just about every imaginable company type in between. If you don’t see a category that fits, you can suggest one.

6. Confirm your hours of business.

Demarcate the hours you’re open from Apple’s list of seven days and you’re set. If you’re open 24 hours, there are checkboxes for that, too.

7. Add your company website and social media accounts.

Simply type or cut, copy and paste the URLs for them into the fields in the Add More Details section.

8. Review your business information.

To confirm that everything is kosher, click “OK” and you’re done. New listings should appear within Apple’s Maps app within a week at most. If additional verification is required, expect to hear from Apple soon.

THE TALENT POOL WILL GROW

As the use of robotics and automation technology increase, humans will no longer be asked to perform rote tasks. That means the nature of jobs will change. Greater connectivity means we will have greater access to talent literally all over the planet.

A new form of labor pool and market where individuals, project teams, or even entrepreneurial companies (that are really just teams of teams) from all over the world will bid on high-value tasks and opportunities. This new dynamic will not only increase the efficiency of organizations, it will also change the notion of what “managing” means. It will also create competitive pressures for organizations to embrace global languages and cultural awareness as a way to appeal to the most talented workers.

COLLABORATION WILL BE THE NORM

The type of company–and people–that will thrive in this new environment will embrace collaboration and teamwork. I call them the Betas. The old-fashioned Alpha way of doing business–top-down, command-and-control–will no longer be viable.

As Alpha methods die out, employers will be looking for innovators, technologists, and big thinkers. Data managers will remain in high demand as will people with the skills to manage a diverse workforce.

A RISE IN “LIMITED CONTRACTS”

As we move into a craftsman and service economy, people will work for organizations for two to four years with incentives built in to compensate them for the level of impact they bring to the organization.

SPECIALIZATION WILL BE EVEN MORE ESSENTIAL

The flatter and more networked the workplace becomes, the more essential it will be for people to continually build their skillset and maintain a level of specialization that enables them to stand out in a crowd of talent.

SOCIAL NETWORKS BECOME A WAY TO PARTNER

Workers at all levels will need to market themselves through their social networks, forming partnerships and gaining influence by striking deals based on their deep skill specialization.

EVERYONE WILL BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR

People will work for and with many clients and partners simultaneously. At the same time, individuals will have greater control over the kind of work they tackle and how they are compensated.

INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTION, NOT PAY GRADE, WILL BE REWARDED

With a more peer-to-peer network in place, individuals stand to reap greater rewards than in the more inefficient hierarchical systems of the past where those at the top of the pyramid paid themselves first. Rewards will be tied to the value of an individual’s contribution and not to any artificial title.

The future of work will be different than it is today and, as the old adage says, fortune favors the prepared.
